“Hotaru”(Firefly) in Kyoto.

We love this tiny beetle. It flies and glows.
And we call it “Hotaru”.
Most of you might not be familiar with it, but some might call it “firefly”.
Basically they live by clear stream in countryside. However here in Kyoto, you can meet them along Kamogawa River, Shirakawa River, Horikawa River, and more streams or canals such as the “Philosopher’s Path”. Because the neighbors of such rivers conserve the fireflies keeping their living environment.
Now is in season. Go for night walk along river.
Good luck for meeting them.

It is said fireflies have active time to fly periodically.
The first peak hour is from half past 7 with dusk to 9.
The second peak hour is about 11.
The third peak hour is midnight 1 to 2.

And fireflies become active particularly on the day which is humid and windless cloudy without moonlight.
